In previous terms, the department utilized a mixed laptop and desktop environment that required instructors to help administer student devices. By trying to keep up with the latest downloads and patches and making sure all students were able to independently access statistical applications such as IPython and R on their own computers as well as helping navigate the tricky world of Vagrant software plug-ins, instructors were getting distracted from their core role. As one of the faster growing departments on campus, Statistics needed to explore ways of minimizing provisioning overhead, but also needed a technology partner that was flexible and accommodating. “We looked at some of the larger vendors, but no one was able to provide us with the flexibility and support we needed to provision servers in the cloud, while working within the constraints of the campus’ financial system,” stated Ryan Lovett, systems manager in the department. “From Phoenix NAP’s cloud solution to its customer support right on down to its billing department; we’ve received the best experience as we provide a better learning environment for both professors and students.” “UC Berkeley is a historic institution showcasing some of the brightest minds in our country and we could not be more pleased to help make its shift to the cloud an easy and productive one,” stated Ian McClarty, president of Phoenix NAP. “UC Berkeley is a shining example of how technology progress, done at the right time with the right technology can truly revolutionize how a successful institution can continue to innovate.” Bringing the Cloud to the Campus On today’s diverse university campus, all varieties of laptop, tablet and smart phone grace the backpacks of every student and professor, often times in multiple quantities. This hyper dynamic tech landscape is no different at UC Berkeley and the associated BYOD requirements can put even the most diligent IT managers to the test. With the highest growth department on campus, the UC Berkeley Department of Statistics chose a secure cloud environment from Phoenix NAP to offload the historic burden placed on the department’s instructors to keep pace with the incredible device diversity as typical on campus. Statistics students and graduate students can now access all required secure cloud work environments through remote desktop applications on their own device or they can choose to use departmental computers. In either case, each student has access to the very latest in technology while offloading any IT management or trouble shooting from department instructors; a much appreciated change. Finally, with Phoenix NAP’s dedication to customer service and customization, the department can provision computing resources with great flexibility and not be charged for services they are not using.
